We are now half way through Term 1. Room 1 or should I say 'Kowhai kids' have had a brilliant start to the new year!

We have embraced the new year with fun and play, and alongside that has come the learning!

Swimming has been a big part of our afternoon programme this term. We finished the swimming season this week, with a fun swimming sports day at Hampden Street School pool. Rooms 1 and 2 had the smaller pools while rooms 3 and 4 had the big pool for their more competitive sports. The pool is solar heated so it was warm, and it turned out to be a sunny day, so everyone was happy. We had flutter board and swimming races. All children were happy to try lengths. Great stuff. A few fun activities we did, were the ball above your head relays and the ring on your head relay! A whole group whirl pool and then finished with free play and the slide. This was very popular! We then all walked over as a school to Fairfield Park and had lunch and a play before heading back to Hira School on the bus. A fun day was had by all, and as I am learning, it's all in Hira time!

We celebrated Purple cake day a couple of weeks, and once again as a school we worked together and had a wonderful week of different activities. Tuesday was dress up in Purple and as you can see by the photo's the whole school was involved. In our class, we had purple streamers, purple water play and purple play dough to make our own cupcakes with(Yum)! On the Wednesday the school worked in Whanau groups to paint flags of 'hope' and messages on the back of them. Then on the Friday we had a shared lunch and most children purchased a purple cupcake that the seniors had made with parents. The seniors had also made purple cakes and took them out to different businesses in the Nelson region, which raised more money. The school raised over $1,000.00 for the Haiti and Christchurch earthquake funds. This worked in well with our theme this year which is 'walking in someone else's shoes'! I was so proud to be a part of the Hira School fund raising, as children became more aware of the needs of others.

Rooms 1 and 2 had a bike week that same week, as the lead up to the Tryathlon. The Hira Highway was so busy that week! Room 1 was allowed on the highway at morning tea time and Room 2 at lunchtimes, and in between they also got to practice either on their bikes or scooters. The children loved it. On the Friday afternoon after a lot of practice of running, biking and swimming, Kowhai Kids were first to start. One lap of the field running, 1 lap of the Hira highway and 2 widths of the school pool. And wow, they all participated and enjoyed the whole event crossing the finishing line with enthusiasm! They were then able to watch their older siblings or friends and support the rest of the school in their pursuits of competing. Another fun day was had by all.

Kowhai Kids have established great routines already this year, and are able to manage a lot of what they do, themselves! We have lots of different visitors through the classroom in a week and also children who are there either just for a morning or a day a week. And I am so proud of how they are all able to integrate these children into their work and play, as if they had always been there. Well done Kowhai Kids.

We are going to be looking over the next part of the term at what nationalities we have in the classroom and cultural activities related to them. We are going to be communicating with a Junior class in the North of England. I will keep you posted as to how and what we will be communicating.

This is just a brief over view of the beginning of the term. We always welcome visitors, or comments on our blog site. The children will be adding to this a lot more, as I see my voice fading and there voices speaking out loud and managing the blog site.
